Dark Souls III: Halflight, Spear of the Church Boss Fight

In this video I'm going to show you how to kill the boss called Halflight Spear of the Church in the Dark Souls III DLC, The Ringed City. You encounter this boss inside a church on a hilltop after getting past a very nasty dual-wielding Ringed Knight just outside.

As you enter the church, there is one of those large summoner monsters that you have previously seen wandering around in the swamp area. Except this one is not physically hostile, but it talks. A lot. It actually takes so long to get to the point that I started wondering if it's just trying to bore me to death and avoid the battle.

The actual boss you will be fighting is a humanoid called Halflight Spear of the Church. Before he spawns, one of his lackeys will spawn, so try to kill it off quickly so you won't have two on your hands at the same time. Later in the fight, another lackey will spawn, so at the very least, the first should be killed before that happens.

After killing the boss, it occurred to me that perhaps I could just have killed the big summoner guy during all his talking and avoided this fight altogether. I will never know, but since this is a Dark Souls game and nothing is supposed to be easy, I'm thinking it probably wouldn't have worked. And as much as I would have liked to smack it around a bit to get it to shut up, then I would have missed a fun boss fight.

I suppose there is reason to the madness, though. Apparently, if you play online, the game will try to match you up against another player that you will fight instead of the boss. If that's not possible or if you play offline like me, you will get the boss instead. It makes sense that all the talking time is to cover up that the game is trying to find a player to match you against.

I suppose that being matched against another player could be harder than killing the boss. Unless you were to get matched against me, then it would probably be a lot easier since I'm no good at PvP. Well, I've actually never tried PvP, so perhaps I'm really awesome at it. We'll never know. But yeah, let's say that I'm really awesome at it. Nobody can prove otherwise anyway ;-)

Right, the boss himself is a versatile fighter using both sword and shield, magic, and bow and arrows. Although he feels like a fairly easy boss, I for some reason had some difficulties finding the rhythm of the fight. He would often manage to get hits in just as I was about to hit him or he would manage to dodge away just as I made my swing, but overall, it's not a complicated fight, and other than the spawning lackeys, there is only one phase where you fight the boss, so there are no changing patterns all of a sudden.

You will see me using my favorite heavy weaponry in this fight, Lorian's Greatsword. It's great for bashing through enemies that hide behind shields and this boss is no exception. It looking really cool when it's on fire is just a bonus ;-)
