Elden Ring: Adan, Thief of Fire (Malefactor's Evergaol) Boss Fight

Adan, Thief of Fire is in the lowest tier of bosses in Elden Ring, Field Bosses, and is the boss and only enemy found in the Malefactor’s Evergaol in Liurnia of the Lakes. Like most lesser bosses in Elden Ring, he is optional in the sense that you do not need to kill him to progress in the story.
As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.
Adan, Thief of Fire is in the lowest tier, Field Bosses, and is the boss and only enemy found in the Malefactor’s Evergaol in Liurnia of the Lakes. Like most lesser bosses in Elden Ring, he is optional in the sense that you do not need to kill him to progress in the story.
I had only recently ventured into Liurnia of the Lakes when I came across this evergaol and I figured it would be nice with an easy boss fight, since most evergaols in Limgrave were quite easy – the one in Stormhill being a notable exception.
Turns out this one is an exception too; I found this boss quite difficult until I eventually managed to figure out the rhythm. The most important hint is probably to stay well away from the big floating fireball he summons as it likes to explode and give people who are too close a medium roast.
For someone who is so known for stealing fire that it’s in his title, he sure seems willing to give it back as he uses it a lot. And when he’s not spewing flames or summoning mean fireballs, he attempts to bash in a certain completely innocent Tarnished’s head with a flail. And it’s not a slow flail, it’s a really fast flail!
According to game lore, evergaols are some sort of infinite prisons that the prisoners will never, ever escape from. They’ll be stuck there for all eternity. That seems a bit harsh in general, but for this guy I’m starting to think it’s very fitting. Not only is he a thief, he’s also quite violent, aggressive and just straight up annoying.
What worked well on him was to slowly kite him around the circular area in the center of the evergaol. This will both constantly keep you away from the summoned fireballs, but it will also help bait out his attacks when he gets closer, but since you’re constantly walking backwards you will often be just out of range when he attacks, so his flail will make dents in the ground instead of your skull. And if dents must be made, I think it’s better that way. After he does a combo, a well-timed jumping heavy attack will return the favor and put the dents in his face where they belong.
This boss is supposedly a Tarnished too and he even has a small supply of Crimson Tears that he will happily sip if you let him. He doesn’t have very many flasks and will run out after a while though. It seems to be possible to interrupt his healing as well, but he often runs away when he’s about to drink, so it’s not so easy.
Being a Tarnished, he’s probably really annoyed at being stuck in an evergaol instead of pursuing his destiny as Elden Lord, which explains his foul mood and bad attitude. But there can be only one Elden Lord and we all know who the hero of this particular story is.
Oh, and don’t go stealing fire. It’s really hot, you’ll get burned ;-)
